What is the BNP Paribas Open?

The BNP Paribas Open is the largest combined ATP Tour Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tennis event in the world. The BNP Paribas Open has been named Tournament of the Year by both the WTA and the ATP Tour for a record-setting eight years.

What does BNP Paribas stand for?

BNP Paribas is a French international banking group, founded in 2000 from the merger between Banque Nationale de Paris and Paribas, formerly known as the Banque de Paris et des Pays-Bas. BNP Paribas is the tournaments title sponsor.

Where is the event?

The BNP Paribas Open takes place annually at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, located 15 miles southeast of Palm Springs, California.

The facility address is 78-200 Miles Avenue, Indian Wells, CA 92210. See our Transportation page for driving directions and the best way to travel to the tournament.

When will the 2023 BNP Paribas Open take place?

The 2023 BNP Paribas Open will be held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on March 6 – 19, 2023.

Who plays at the BNP Paribas Open?

The BNP Paribas Open features men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles and women’s doubles action that takes place over the course of the two week-event. The 2022 player field was highlighted by Rafael Nadal, Iga Świątek, Coco Gauff and Daniil Medvedev. The player fields for the 2023 tournament will be released closer to the start of the event.

The winningest champions in BNP Paribas Open history are two of the most recognizable names in the history of the sport: Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. The Swiss and Serb are tied for the tournament record with five titles a piece, with Federer raising the trophy in ’04, ’05, ’06, ‘12 and ’17, while Djokovic earned the title in ’08, ’11, ’14, ’15 and ’16.

How does the draw work and when is it held?

The 32 seeded players (highest ranked players per the WTA Tour or ATP Tour ranking system) are placed on the draw: No. 1 is put on the first line, No. 2 on the last line and then the others in alternating order on pre-determined lines. Once the seeds are in place, the other players are drawn at random and placed on the empty lines starting at the top of the page and going down the draw until it is filled. The public is welcome on a free admission basis to watch the WTA Tour Singles Main Draw and the ATP Tour Singles Main Draw at the Stadium Plaza.

The ATP and WTA draws for the 2023 BNP Paribas Open will take place at the Stadium Plaza in the days leading up to the start of the tournament.
