World No. 20 Nick Kyrgios, a quarterfinalist here a year ago, has withdrawn from the BNP Paribas Open due to an elbow injury.
Kyrgios has not played since the first week of February due to the injury. Lucky loser Matteo Berrettini replaces Kyrgios in the draw. The Italian ranked No. 108 in the world will meet Daniil Medvedev in round two on Saturday.
Last year the Australian upset Novak Djokovic in the fourth round here en route to the final eight before having to pull out of the event due to illness.
