Christopher O'Connell surged back inside the Top 100 after advancing through qualifying to reach the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in Rotterdam in February. He rose from unranked in 2019 to a career-high No. 53 in September 2023 after winning his fifth Challenger title in Shanghai without dropping a set (finishing 2022 at No. 78). His breakthrough ATP run came with a first semifinal in San Diego in 2022, then a second tour semifinal in Munich in 2023 after beating No. 16 Zverev. He stopped playing tennis in 2018 due to many injuries to clean boats with his brother and get away from tennis, deciding to come back to the sport in 2019.
