The 22-year-old American Michael Zheng made his main draw debut at the 2026 Australian Open after saving a match point against Klein in the final round of qualifying. In 2025 he went on a 15-match winning streak at ATP Challenger level to capture titles in Chicago, Columbus and Tiburon. He began last season at No. 759 in the ATP Rankings but comes into Indian Wells inside the Top 150 and near his career-high. The Columbia University standout was the 2024 and 2025 NCAA men’s singles champion after a runner-up finish in 2023, becoming first back-to-back champion since Steve Johnson in 2011-12. He earned ITA All-American honors in all four years and became Columbia’s first NCAA singles champion since 1906.
