2024 Australian Open Update: Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka Mount Title Defense
2 Min Read · January 23, 2024

The first Grand Slam of the year can often be telling in how the rest of the tennis season will play out. With the semifinals nearly set in Melbourne at the 2024 Australian Open, the two reigning champions have shown no signs of backing down from a title defense.

Novak Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenka are just two wins a way each from securing repeat titles, but a hungry field of competitors stand in their way looking to stake their own claim and secure a signature win before heading off to the desert this March for the 2024 BNP Paribas Open.

Djokovic Squashes Spoiler Attempt From Taylor Fritz To Reach 11th Australian Open Semifinal

In a quarterfinal matchup between two former BNP Paribas Open champions, Djokovic faced off against Taylor Fritz in what turned out to be one of the toughest tests the Serbian has faced recently. Despite Fritz battling Djokovic to a tiebreak in the first set and winning the second, the American was unable to score the upset victory.

This win moved Djokovic through to the Australian Open semifinal for yet another year, a familiar position as he has now progressed this far in Melbourne for the 11th time in his career. It’s a position that Djokovic is used to, and one he is flawless in. He is undefeated all-time in both AO semifinals and championship matches. 2023 BNP Paribas Open semifinalist Jannik Sinner will look to spoil that perfect record and get the better of Djokovic just like he did once at the 2023 ATP Finals last fall.

But on Djokovic’s favorite court surface in Australia, nothing will be easy.

Sabalenka and Coco Gauff To Meet In Blockbuster Semifinal Clash

Aryna Sabalenka has been dominance personified through her first five matches at the 2024 Australian Open.

The 2023 BNP Paribas Open finalist has dropped 0 sets and just 16 games at the tournament so far in all her matches combined, but will face her toughest yet when she meets Coco Gauff in the semifinal.

Sabalenka vs. Gauff will be the headline women’s match of the tournament so far as the two square off in a rematch of what was a dramatic 2023 US Open final that saw Gauff prevail in a three-set thriller to win her maiden Grand Slam title. Sabalenka will be hungry for revenge and hungry to move one step closer to capturing her second career major title. She has now reached six Grand Slam semifinals in a row but only has one championship to show for it.

Could the Sabalenka-Gauff semifinal be a preview of another late-round matchup to look forward to in Indian Wells this March?
