Just weeks after undergoing emergency surgery for appendicitis, Taylor Townsend is back on court at the WTA Finals at the scene of one of her biggest triumphs of 2026.
The American returns with Czech partner Katerina Siniakova to the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, where in March they captured the BNP Paribas Open doubles title.
The second seeds and top-ranked team in Group 2, Townsend and Siniakova are one of six teams who reached the BNP Paribas Open quarter-finals who are making a second stop in Indian Wells this year.
But it’s a return that almost didn’t happen.
Just five days after the pair won the US Open, Townsend was diagnosed with an inflamed appendix in Mexico and rushed back to the United States for surgery.
"I was just thinking about my son," Townsend recently told Good Morning America. "It was just really, really scary."

Despite playing 23 fewer matches than current Race leaders and WTA Finals top seeds Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani, Siniakova and Townsend are just 125 points behind their rivals.
Dabrowski and Stefani did not claim a major in 2026, but did win six titles, including three WTA 1000s in Dubai, Beijing and Wuhan.
Siniakova and Townsend are looking to cap a remarkable season that included dual Grand Slam success at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadows, and three WTA 1000s in Indian Wells, Miami and Madrid.
But the path to a statement win to cap the season in Indian Wells won’t be easy. Five former WTA Finals champions are in the field: Elise Mertens (2022, 2025), Kristina Mladenovic (2018, 2019), Hsieh Su-Wei (2013), Dabrowski (2024) and Siniakova (2021) herself.
Joining Siniakova and Townsend in Group 2 are American Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Spaniard Cristina Bucsa. Melichar-Martinez said that she’s looking forward to stepping back inside Stadium 2, where in March she and Bucsa enjoyed an upset win over Dabrowski and Stefani, who are the top seeds at the season finale.
"I think Stadium 2 will be a great court for the WTA Finals," Melichar-Martinez said. "Any time you have a good stadium and great crowds like you get at Indian Wells it's going to be a good vibe.
"I'm really excited to come back. Indian Wells is a favorite tournament for most of the players, and it's definitely one of my favorites too.”

Melichar-Martinez has advanced to the knockout stage three times in four career appearances at the WTA Finals, reaching the final with Australian Ellen Perez in 2023. She said the season finale is a great showcase for doubles.
"I think it'll be easier for fans to recognize the doubles players, because sometimes they're not really sure who we are," she said. But with the smaller group of people, I think it's easier to narrow it down. So I think that's fantastic.
"The WTA Finals is more than just a tennis tournament. It reflects a year of achievements coming together for a team to qualify for an event. It's also a celebration of the commitment you've had to your partner for that year, to be consistent and do well.”
