Connecticut native Elliot Spizzirri moved to a career-high No. 71 in early February after a strong start to 2026 that included a run through qualifying to the Auckland quarter-finals and a third-round showing at the Australian Open. At Melbourne Park, Spizzirri looked like causing a massive upset of a cramping Jannik Sinner in brutally hot conditions. But when the roof closed on Rod Laver Arena the Italian two-time defending champion turned things around to win in four sets. Spizzirri won back-to-back ITA National Player of the Year awards in 2023 and 2024 as a Texas Longhorn, and is one of four players to finish as the top-ranked singles player since ITA rankings began in 1981. In his first appearance in Indian Wells last year, Spizzirri lost in the second round of qualifying.
