Izyan Ahmad: From Pinky Promise with Federer to the Big Stage
3 Min Read · March 2, 2026

In 2017, a seven-year-old dreamer nicknamed “Zizou” created a viral moment at the US Open when he asked Roger Federer an audacious question:

“Can you please continue to play for eight, nine years so that I can play you when I go pro?”

Federer, the ageless wonder who had just turned 36, didn’t hesitate — he said yes.

“Is that a promise?” responded Ahmad.

“Pinky promise,” the Swiss maestro replied.

A Pinch-Me Moment

In 2022, a dream was realized when Ahmad was flown to Zurich for a special training session. He had no idea of the immensity of what was about to happen. There, in front of the camera, his training partner was revealed to be none other than Roger Federer himself.

“We made a promise, right?” Federer told Ahmad, who was shaking with disbelief. “We’re going to play. Are you ready?”

Fast-forward another four years, and Ahmad has continued to press on with his career. Now the world’s No. 130-ranked junior, he has taken a wild card into this year’s qualifying draw and will make his debut in the California desert against Argentina’s Thiago Augustin Tirante.

From Dream To Reality

What were the odds that the young lad with a dream and the courage to ask one of the game’s greats a question would one day join the professional ranks?

Ahmad, who made his pro debut last November in Orlando, was out on Practice Court 6 on Sunday afternoon preparing for the biggest match of his life. Far from the boy who first spoke to Federer — and who met him again by surprise in 2022 — the 15-year-old has developed into a poised young man whose game packs a punch. He held an intense practice session and also met with the media for an interview on Sunday night, a rite of passage for an aspiring star.

Whether he wins or loses on Monday, Ahmad’s rise from inquisitive child to the pro ranks is the stuff dreams are made of. He had a dream. He realized it. Now let’s see what comes next.
