2024 BNP Paribas Open qualifying kicked off Sunday with 16 first round qualifying matches taking place across the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. See a quick rundown of key results from Day 1 of qualifying in Tennis Paradise.

18-Year-Old Liv Hovde Headlines Strong Day For American Women

2022 Wimbledon girls’ singles champion Liv Hovde led a strong showing from American women in the first day of WTA qualifying. Hovde took care of business in straight sets against Aliaksandra Sasnovich to reach the second round of qualifying and move one step closer to a first-ever appearance in the main draw at Indian Wells. 23-year-old Southern California native Claire Liu also won her opening qualifying match on Sunday, while another California native Kayla Day got the job done against fellow American Alycia Parks. Day formerly reached the third round at the BNP Paribas Open in 2017 and also appeared in the main draw in 2018.

American veteran Bernarda Pera also advanced, outlasting 17-year-old Christasha McNeil in a dramatic 5-6, 6-2, 7-6(6) battle to move one step closer to consecutive main draw appearances in Indian Wells. Pera is looking to build off a career best run to the third round in the desert at the 2023 BNP Paribas Open.

To close out the day for the Americans, 19-year-old Robin Montgomery took down Spain's Marina Bassols Ribera 6-4, 6-4. Montgomery is searching for her second main draw appearance at Indian Wells, with her first coming in the first round at the 2022 BNP Paribas Open.

Claire Liu looks for her third consecutive appearance in the BNP Paribas Open main draw.

Veteran Sara Errani One Step Closer To First Indian Wells Main Draw Since 2017

Former World No. 5 Sara Errani was also in action to kick off BNP Paribas Open qualifying, as the 36-year-old Italian looks to qualify for the Indian Wells main draw for the first time in over five years. The 2012 Roland-Garros finalist earned a decisive 7-5, 6-1 victory over Aleksandra Krunic on Sunday, putting Errani in a familiar spot. She has reached the second round of qualifying three times in the last five years but has been unable to get that second victory and earn her main draw spot. Errani will meet fellow veteran Arina Rodionova on Tuesday to battle for a coveted spot in the 2024 BNP Paribas Open main draw field.

Elsewhere across the grounds, three-time Indian Wells doubles champion Su-Wei Hsieh prevailed in a three set win to move one step closer to booking her first singles main draw trip in the desert since 2021. The 38-year-old Taiwanese veteran recently announced her retirement from playing singles at all Grand Slam events at the 2024 Australian Open, but is still taking the court for singles at Masters 1000 events.
