3 Min Read · March 4, 2026

In the last 52 weeks, Alexandra Eala has become one of tennis' most delightfully unkept secrets. Rocketing up the rankings — and soaring in popularity — the 20-year-old Filipina has quickly become a household name in the sport, thanks to her electric game, engaging personality and the passion of her fan base.

Eala, who comes to the Coachella Valley with a career-high ranking of No. 31 next to her name, received a warm welcome on Saturday as she took to Practice Court 6 for her first training session at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

The southpaw from Quezon City will make her main draw debut this week in Tennis Paradise, and she is sure to have the support of her myriad adoring fans behind her.

Eala, seeded No. 31, will face either Dayana Yastremska or Zhang Shuai in the second round after a first-round bye.

On a gorgeous, balmy day in the California desert, fans flocked to the Practice Court 6, holding selfie sticks above the crowd to capture footage of the phenom as she put in the hard yards with Great Britain’s Francesca Jones during a grueling practice session.

A Fan Favorite

Angling for a closer look, some peered through fencing on adjacent courts, eager to see the rising talent up close. Others settled into seats on a neighboring court, watching intently as Eala unleashed her thunderous signature forehand.

Eala, the first Filipina to win a main draw match at a Grand Slam at last year's US Open, is also the highest-ranked player in her nation’s history. She cracked the Top 100 last year following a breakout run to the Miami Open semifinals, earning high-profile victories over No. 2-ranked Iga Swiatek and No. 5-ranked Madison Keys along the way.

Her next stop was the Top 50, a massive milestone achieved in November of last year.

She has started 2026 on a mission, reaching three quarterfinals in the first two months of the season — matching her total from all of last year.

After her practice session on Monday (there were two, spaced out by an hour break for lunch), a large group gathered and chanted Eala's name as she moved across the player's lawn and passed into the player's lounge.

It's the new reality for the rising talent. The Eala effect is real, and growing.
