Women's singles qualifying concludes on Tuesday in Tennis Paradise, with 12 matches taking place across six courts on a picturesque day in the Coachella Valley.

Townsend On The Move 

Taylor Townsend flicked a perfect backhand passing shot past 19-year-old Akasha Urhobo. It sailed into the shadows and kissed the sideline for a clean winner that sent the American to the main draw for the ninth time. It also brought a jam-packed Stadium 4 to its feet.

It was a high-energy day around the grounds, as men and women fought to take their spot in the main draw.

Townsend, fresh off her first WTA final, saved seven of eight break points to keep the rising teen at bay. 

Kayla Has Her Day 

Southern Californian Kayla Day made her initial splash in Tennis Paradise in 2017 when she reached the third round as a 17-year-old – she was the youngest player in the WTA’s Top 200 at the time. The Santa Barbara native has dropped in the rankings due to injury and will make her first appearance in a main draw at tour-level since 2024. 

Day, currently ranked No. 187, defeated Latvia’s Darja Semenistaja 6-2, 6-1 in Stadium 6 to book her main draw spot. 

Parry Powers Through 

Also moving through in early action on Tuesday was Frenchwoman Diane Parry. The World No. 11, who reached the round of 16 here in 2024, defeated New Zealand’s Lulu Sun, 6-2, 6-3, in Stadium 8.

Fast fact: The best result by a qualifier in singles in Tennis Paradise came in 1989. Jenny Byrne is the only qualifier to reach the women’s singles final in Indian Wells. She eventually lost to Manuela Maleeva in the 1989 final.
