2024 Wimbledon Preview: Three Stars Seeking Maiden Title in London
2 Min Read · July 1, 2024

Few settings in tennis are as special as the grass courts of the All England Tennis Club, most famously known as the annual venue of Wimbledon.

The action is already underway in South London where the best players in the world have convened for two weeks of competition and a shot at capturing one of the season’s marquee titles. Carlos Alcaraz and Marketa Vondrousova ride into London with targets on their back as the defending champions, but a handful of superstars will be looking to lift the famous trophy for the first time in their careers.

Here are three names to watch as favorites to win their first-ever Wimbledon title this July.

Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner has put together a monumental 2024 season so far that has seen him win a maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and also reach the World No. 1 ranking. A strong showing at Roland-Garros and an injury from Novak Djokovic propelled Sinner to reach the World No. 1 in June, becoming the first Italian man or woman to reach the top position.

But Sinner still left Paris with a sour taste of his mouth after losing a tough semifinal clash against New Era rival Carlos Alcaraz, and he’ll look to the grass courts in London as a chance to get back on track after his scorching hot start to 2024. As the No. 1 seed in a major for the first time in his career, the pressure will be on.

Iga Swiatek

For as dominant as Iga Swiatek has been in her young illustrious career, it might come as a bit of a shock that the Pole’s best career finish on the grass courts of London was only a quarterfinal appearance in 2023.

While her game has virtually been flawless on all other surfaces, the World No. 1 is yet to make a deep run at Wimbledon, and 2024 may represent her best chance yet as she enters the tournament on a 19-match winning streak. The two-time Indian Wells champion has shown her comfort and ability to dominate on hard court/clay surfaces, but now the attention will shift to London to see if she can work her magic on the grass courts that have tripped her up in the past.

Coco Gauff

Coco Gauff’s 2024 season has included some strong showings with semifinal runs at the Australian Open, Indian Wells, and Roland-Garros – but she’s lacking the marquee victory to follow up her breakthrough title at the 2023 US Open last fall.

Wimbledon has proved to be a tough test for Gauff in the past as she’s yet to advance past the Round of 16, but the American could be in for some good fortune this year with her half of the draw wide open following the withdrawal of No. 3 seed Aryna Sabalenka prior to the start of the tournament. While stringing together seven straight wins is never an easy task, Gauff will certainly have an easier path of competitors to the final than she’s faced in previous major tournaments.

It will be up to Gauff though to seize the opportunity in front of her and try to capture a second career Grand Slam singles title.
