The grounds of the Indian Wells Tennis Garden were teeming with activity from the get-go on an idyllic Monday morning, as men’s singles qualifying kicked off with a full slate of matches across seven courts.
It didn’t take long for the energy to hit a fever pitch, as wild card Rudy Quan, a UCLA Freshman who captured the Boys’ 18 singles title at the FILA International Junior Championships at Indian Wells last year, upset Federico Augustin Gomez of Argentina, 6-4, 7-5.
A rambunctious celebration followed on Stadium 5, as the 19-year-old who attended high school just 150 miles to the west at Century Academy in Thousand Oaks soaked up the moment.
Quan broke Augustin Gomez’s serve five times from ten opportunities, including a break at love against the World No. 135 to close out the victory in one hour and 40 minutes. Quan is competing in his first ATP event, and he had never defeated a player ranked higher than 274 prior to today’s win.
The lowest-ranked player to compete in men’s singles qualifying at No. 731, Quan will face Japan’s Yosuke Watanuki, the World No. 349, for a spot in the main draw on Tuesday.
Watanuki took out top-seeded Italian Mattia Bellucci on Stadium 3, 6-1, 6-2.
In other early action around the grounds, former World No. 17 Cristian Garin powered past Daniel Altmaier, 7-5, 6-4, while Dutchman Botic Van de Zandschulp – the man who shocked defending two-time BNP Paribas Open champion Carlos Alcaraz out of the US Open in the second round last year – defeated Slovakia’s Lukas Klein 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
Van de Zandschulp, ranked No. 85, will face Italy’s Matteo Gigante next.
Elsewhere, former World No. 9 Fabio Fognini was stopped at the first hurdle by American wild card Colton Smith, 6-3, 6-4. The win over the 37-year-old Italian is Smith’s first Top 100 win.
“This was definitely the biggest stage that I’ve played on,” said the Olympia, Washington native of the packed stands inside Stadium 3. “If you added up everybody in the stands right now, that’s probably the same amount of people that I’ve played in front of in my whole career.”
Smith, a senior at the University of Arizona, is the winningest singles player in program history, and is currently No. 3 in the ITA rankings.
