Flushing Meadows has seen some incredible American triumphs over the last few years, and 2024 is shaping up to perhaps be the most promising year yet for domestic stars at their home Grand Slam. As the US Open comes down to Championship Weekend, the Stars and Stripes are waving proudly with American players on the brink of history.
See the top storylines ahead of Championship Weekend In New York:
Jessica Pegula has finally broken through on the big stage.
After losing her previous six Grand Slam quarterfinals, Pegula stormed to a victory over World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, decisively booking her spot in a maiden Major semifinal. She then followed that up with a take down of the surging Karolina Muchova, and now Pegula is on the doorstep of a signature title.
The 30-year-old Pegula has already had a summer to remember as she defended her Canadian Open title and reached the final at Cincinnati, but a win in New York would give her that marquee Grand Slam run that has eluded her throughout her career. She'll have her hands full with 2023 finalist Aryna Sabalenka in Saturday's final, but with her run in New York, Pegula is at the very least returned to World No. 3 and re-cemented herself as the American No. 1 on the WTA Tour.
In a tournament full of American breakthroughs, Emma Navarro was right there with the best of them. The 2021 NCAA Singles Champion from the University of Virginia achieved the best result of her career by making the semifinal. But Navarro’s run came up just short, as she found herself unable to hang with pre-tournament favorite Aryna Sabalenka in Thursday’s semifinal. Despite getting the better of Sabalenka earlier this year at Indian Wells, Navarro simply couldn’t keep up with the World No. 2’s big hitting, which now has her back into her second consecutive US Open final, where she’ll look to avenge last year’s loss against Coco Gauff.
It’s been 18 years since an American man reached the US Open men’s singles final, and in 2024, fans won’t event have to sweat it. The semifinal showdown of Taylor Fritz vs. Frances Tiafoe guarantees that there will be a home countryman playing in Sunday’s final, a feat that will have fans in New York eager to see history.
These two Americans first met at Indian Wells in 2016 as young wild cards, where Tiafoe took the first clash. Fritz has since won their last six meetings, including the only previous time they met at a Grand Slam in the 2022 Australian Open.
While Fritz may have the historic upperhand, Tiafoe has the greater experience playing on these grand stages, as he's just two years removed from his run to the semifinals at the 2022 Australian Open. The two will meet in the night match on Friday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, with a spot up for grabs to earn the honor of becoming the first American man in a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick at 2009 Wimbledon.
