Family Affair: Cousins Vacherot and Rinderknech Stun Djokovic, Tsitsipas

It’s the stuff of legend.

Last year in Shanghai, when Valentin Vacherot became the lowest-ranked ATP Masters 1000 champion in history, it was his cousin, Arthur Rinderknech, whom he defeated in the final.

Five months later, the pair are blazing a trail on the same side of the court.

This week Vacherot and Rinderknech, who lost a tight three-setter to Carlos Alcaraz in singles on Monday night in the desert, are adding another page to the family scrapbook.

First, they took out Daniil Medvedev and Learner Tien in the first round for their first ATP-level doubles win together. On Tuesday they took it a step further by defeating Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas on Stadium 2, 7-6(4), 7-5.

Vacherot and Rinderknech have bragging rights over Djokovic.

Vacherot, who defeated Djokovic during his title run in Shanghai, can now boast two victories over the Serbian legend.

“He was already 1-0 up against Djokovic in singles,” Rinderknech said. “Now he's 2-0 overall, and I'm 1-0. I'm not sure many players can say that, you know? It's a fun fact.”

The cousins will face Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov for a spot in the semifinals next. Rublev and Khachanov took down Felix Auger-Aliassime and Sebastian Korda, 7-6(3), 4-6, 10-5.

“Right now we're having fun and we're not putting too much thought into playing the big points. We're going for our shots and it's working. We're playing good, and as Arthur says, we have a lot of joy. We’re at one of the best tournaments in the world playing doubles, so we're putting in full effort.”

“It’s cool,” said Rinderknech. “It’s a great time to be playing together, and winning makes it even better. We are just enjoying the days here. It's a great tournament. It's a big event, so the bigger the wins the better it is.”

In other men’s doubles action on Tuesday, top-seeded Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos defeated Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul, 2-6, 6-3, 10-5.

Andrea Vavassori and Alexander Erler defeated Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni, 6-3, 7-6(3), while fourth-seeded Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski topped Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos, 6-3, 6-4.

Fifth-seeded Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz defeated Constantin Frantzen and Robin Haase, 6-4, 7-6(10).

Townsend and Siniakova Advance

Two-time major champions Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova took care of business on Stadium 3, defeating eighth-seeded Ellen Perez and Demi Schuurs, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the semifinals.

Siniakova, who defeated defending champion Mirra Andreeva in round of 16 singles action yesterday, is one of two women still remaining in both singles and doubles draws. Canada's Victoria Mboko is the other.
