Sunshine And Sinner: Italian Powers Past Shapovalov
3 Min Read · March 9, 2026

Jannik Sinner continued his steady progression in Tennis Paradise on Sunday with a clinical 6-3, 6-2 victory over Canada’s Denis Shapovalov to close the day session inside Stadium 1.

The World No. 2, who dropped just two games in his first match on Friday evening, needed just 71 minutes to power past the former Top 10 talent.

He didn’t break free of the Canadian until he scored a break in the eighth game of the opening set. From there, the four-time major champion was generally in control of proceedings as he advanced to the round of 16, where either Tommy Paul or Joao Fonseca will be waiting.

Since 2023, Sinner has defeated all players not named Carlos Alcaraz in the California desert. He is 13-3 overall at Indian Wells.

If the seeds hold, Sinner and Alcaraz could meet in the final on championship Sunday. It would be their 17th career meeting, and third in the California desert.

Catching a wave of momentum as shadows slid across the gritty hard courts, Sinner broke Shapovalov in the opening game of the second set and then again for insurance at 5-2. In total, the ruthless Italian won 22 of the final 24 points to finish his day in high style.

Zverev Fights Past Nakashima

Brandon Nakashima nearly pulled the upset of the day in Stadium 2, but in the end he fell just shy as No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev fought off 17 aces from the Southern California native and emerged with a 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 victory.

“I think today was a completely different match than the last couple of times we played,” said Zverev, who will face either Flavio Cobolli or Frances Tiafoe next. “I have never seen him serve the way he served, so credit to him. I think he's improved a lot, and definitely happy with the win.”

In other early action, No. 18-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina defeated 12th-seeded Jakub Mensik, while 20-year-old American Learner Tien toppled 8th-seeded Ben Shelton, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3.
