26 For ’26: Your Complete 2026 Indian Wells Preview
3 Min Read · March 4, 2026

The wait is over! Main draw action kicks off on Wednesday in the California desert, which means now is the perfect time to spotlight 26 key storylines for ’26 in Tennis Paradise.

1 – First Combined ATP Masters/WTA 1000 Event of the Year

Indian Wells is the first combined ATP Masters and WTA 1000 event of the season — the first time since the Australian Open that the sport’s biggest stars share the same stage.

2 – Champions Return

Mirra Andreeva and Jack Draper are back to defend their titles. No woman has defended the crown here since 1991, while Carlos Alcaraz was the last man to go back-to-back, in 2024.

3 – Chasing a Third

Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek are bidding for third titles in Tennis Paradise. Swiatek would become the first woman to win three singles titles here, while Alcaraz would join Federer, Djokovic and Nadal as the only three-time men’s singles champions this century.

4 – American Men in the Top 25

Taylor Fritz (No. 7), Ben Shelton (No. 8), Frances Tiafoe (No. 22) and Tommy Paul (No. 22) lead the American charge, with eyes on breaking up the Alcaraz-Sinner duopoly.

5 – American Women in the Top 20

Coco Gauff (No. 4), Jessica Pegula (No. 5), Amanda Anisimova (No. 6), Madison Keys (No. 15) and Iva Jovic (No. 18) aim to end a title drought — no American woman has won here since Serena Williams in 2001.

6 – Djokovic for Six?

No player has ever claimed six titles in the desert. Five-time champion Novak Djokovic returns with a chance to make history, fresh off an Australian Open final.

7 – Youth Movement

Each of the last seven women’s champions has been 23 or younger — Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Paula Badosa, Swiatek (twice), Elena Rybakina and Andreeva. The generational shift is real.

8 – Women’s Wild Cards

Andreescu, Jennifer Brady, Alycia Parks, Sloane Stephens, Lilli Tagger, Donna Vekic, Katie Volynets and Venus Williams made the cut this year.

9 – Nine Stadium Courts

Fans can roam nine competition courts across the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, creating one of the most immersive viewing experiences in tennis.

10 – Two-Time Women’s Champions

Ten women have won multiple singles titles at the event. Swiatek and Victoria Azarenka are the only active players among them.

11 – Sinner’s Record

Jannik Sinner enters with an 11-3 lifetime record in the desert, and back-to-back semifinal appearances in 2023 and 2024 to his name. The four-time major champion has yet to claim the elusive title he seeks, however.

12 – Stadium 2 Turns 12

Stadium 2 marks its 12th year as a cornerstone of the grounds. Always buzzing, the 8,000 capacity two-story venue is known as much for its late-night thrillers as its in-house Nobu.

13 – Big Three Dominance

Djokovic (5), Federer (5) and Nadal (3) are the only men this century with three or more titles here.

14 – Live Music at the Village Stage

Fourteen musical acts highlight this year’s entertainment lineup, including Abi Carter (March 4) and the Bryan Brothers Band (March 10).

15 – Fifteen Days of Action

From opening qualifying to championship Sunday, the event runs March 1–15.

16 – Years Since Nadal’s Doubles Milestone

Nadal captured his first doubles title here in 2010 and became the first player since Boris Becker (1989) to win multiple singles and doubles titles at the event.

17 – Youngest Women’s Champion

Serena Williams (17 years, five months) remains the youngest women’s singles champion in Tennis Paradise. Andreeva became the second 17-year-old to win the women’s title last year, at 17 years and 10 months.

18 – Youngest Player in the Draw

Tagger, 18, is the youngest player in the main draw this year.

19 – Youngest Men’s Champion

Boris Becker was the youngest men’s champion when he won in 1987. Alcaraz was slightly older when he lifted his first title here in 2023.

20 – Twenty Practice Courts

Twenty practice courts give fans unparalleled access to the game’s biggest names as they fine-tune their tennis to compete for the prestigious Baccarat crystal trophy. All backdropped by one of the most picturesque settings in all of tennis.

21 – Years Since Lindsay’s Finals Run

Two-time champion Lindsay Davenport reached three consecutive finals (ending in 2005). Federer is the only player to accomplish that feat twice.

22 – Swiatek’s Win Rate

Two-time champion Swiatek owns a 22-3 record here and is chasing history again in the desert as she bids to become the first woman to win three titles.

23 – Alcaraz’s Resume

Two-time champion Alcaraz enters 20-3 lifetime in the desert, with titles in 2023 and 2024.

24 – The Qualifiers

Twelve men and 12 women fought their way into the main draw, battling through two rounds of qualifying that lasted three days.

25 – The American Drought

It has been 25 years since an American woman lifted the trophy. Will 2026 end it?

26 – A Quarter-Century of Tennis

The Indian Wells Tennis Garden opened in March 2000 and continues to evolve 26 years later.
